At the very least, it seems likely that her wedding songs might have been performed by choruses. Unfortunately, there is not enough conclusive evidence to determine the context in which Sappho's songs were sung. ![]() But there is considerable disagreement among scholars about whether Sappho's poems were for solo or choral performance. Like other poetry of her day, Sappho's was composed primarily for oral performance. ![]() Much of the fascination about Sappho over the centuries has been fueled by the fact that she is a woman addressing many of her love poems to other women, that we know almost nothing about her life, and that, in modern times, her poems survive mostly in fragments. While two hundred fragments have been attributed to Sappho, only two complete poems and approximately forty fragments survive. Ancient sources state that she produced nine volumes of poetry. Born at the close of the seventh century BCE, Sappho was famously declared the “Tenth Muse” by Plato. Sappho was a Greek lyric poet from Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. Hellboy - Seed of Destruction #2 (October 1994) ![]() ![]() ![]() The adults are still pretty useless in this book, and I will stress that this is a book for a particular age group. Uncle Monty is a lovable character who is as oblivious as he is brilliant, and I thought his profession and the way the reptiles are woven into the story made it for a much more interesting read. I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first. However, when Uncle Monty hires Stephano, the new assistant is strangely familiar to the children. The children warm to him immediately, and prepare to accompany him on his next expedition to Peru. ![]() After things end rather badly with Count Olaf, the Baudelaire children are sent to live instead with Dr Montgomery Montgomery, a world renowned herpetologist who lives in a wonderful large house housing countless species of reptile. “The Reptile Room” by Lemony Snicket is the second book of the 13 that make up “A Series of Unfortunate Events”. The hardcover editions of the series are really lovely with deckle edges and eerie illustrations. As is often the case, I was scrounging around for short books to read at the end of last year to meet my reading goal, and I thought I’d pick the series back up. But your sister will destroy as much as she can before she goes out. ![]() And I’m going to try to keep this review short, because I completely recognize that this series just doesn’t work for me! But this is a historical reimagining, starring two children during the fall of Constantinople, but one of those children is a genderbent Vlad the Impaler. ![]() I didn’t hate this book by any means, it’s just really a 2.5 star, middle of the road book for me. And if you want my honest opinion? Read The Traitor Baru Cormorant, because it’s a better version of (Radu’s storyline especially) this story. So many of my friends love this series more than anything and you should check out their reviews: Chaima (Muslim ownvoices), Elise, and Emily!
